Parenting Tips

Lies and Fibs

Almost everyone tells lies form time to time for a variety of reasons, from avoiding hurting someone else’s feelings to getting out of an awkward situation.
When children don’t tell the truth it can be very distressing for parents.
It is normal for young children to blame someone else or make up a story. They are less likely to tell the truth if they think it will make their parents cross.
We need to look to the causes of why your child may not be telling the truth. It is easy to become upset about the lie and overlook what it means to the child.
It is important to try to understand the reasons why your child might lie before you react.

Having Fun with Your Child

Quick Tip 1

By playing with your child regularly every day you will decrease undesirable behaviour.  They will feel special, valued and important in your life. This will build their self-esteem. If you give them a few blocks of 10 -15 minutes of uninterrupted play time with you throughout the day, they will be much happier to play independently while you attend to other ‘jobs.’

Quick Tip 2

Have a theme day at your house, such as a red day, an autumn day, an upside down day. Everything has to be red: red clothes, red food, red paintings, red drawings, red flowers, or everything has to be upside down, eat on the floor, and have your pyjamas on, wear your T shirt inside out, wear odd shoes, just have a fun, be silly and play with your child.

Quick Tip 3

Play music to create a certain atmosphere, take balls outdoors

to the park and run and play with your child. Notice how many parents at the

park are really playing with their child.
